CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Teen culture experience a number of shifting trends. Today, "You Only Live Once" is a very epidemic phrase; this concept of YOLO can help you live your life to the fullest, however, not everyone of us recognizes the true meaning of this. It may seem strange to allow this concept to influence our minds. But still, we accept and apply this to our community. Simlpy because we all know that each of us has our own limited time in Earth, and wants to live a life full of happiness and satisfaction.

Before, there was the emo culture. The term emo originated form a melodic sub-genre of punk rock music first called "emocor" or "emotional hardcore". It has evolved to become a well organized slang term to describe a group with particular reference in clothes, music, and behaviorsThis traits are being applied by the teenagers to themselves. Because of  the way they dress and adorn themselves, "some youth groups are viewed as threatening," (http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/pdfdocs/youth/emo.pdf).

The researcher realized that emo is just like an art expression. Teenagers have this kind of expression where in they dress in black clothes, put in dark eyeliner, and listen into very loud music. Emo is also used to describe a particular relationship between fans and a subculture embracin a distinct set of values and behaviors. That's why people shouldn't be frightened by their appearance.

Then there was jejemon. This are the people who spell words unnecessarily eleborately, usually with sticky caps. They are kind of the like "jologs" people except that nowadays being jologs is equated with being game for everything or being low-maintenance which isn't really that much bad thing. Being a "jejemon" however is "frowned upon as it confuses and annoys whoever the jejemon is speaking to," (http://globalvoicesonline.org/2010/05/16/philippines-the-jejemon-craze/).

The researcher thought the "jejemon" is just a fad, something that will cease to exist in the years to come. Beacause of the fact that most people considered jejemons at the recenyt years are the young ones, those who are still discovering their true identities.

It seems that every few years teens develop a teen culture that everyone adheres to. It develops it's own cath phrase, fashion and lifestyle. These teenagers get their culture, gossip and attitudes from Google and Facebook. They are "constantly on, constantly promoting themselves and constantly connected." (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/jun/26/untangling-web-krotoski-youth-culture).

The researcher concluded that teenagers are easily influenced on what is in. "Youth Culture" is the outcome of the process that teenagers, navigating the tortures period of adolescence, go through as they seek a community that's distinct from that which has come before. It is also a period rich in self-expression.

The researcher observes that we are in the middle of such a culture. There is an emerging culture which teenagers call YOLO. This is an acronym stand for "You Only Live Once", this is a very epidemic phrase nowadays to teenagers. This is usually seen as hashtags at social medias.

CHAPTER 2
DISCUSSION

What are the benefits and downside of YOLO?
Can YOLO change one's life?

Definition of YOLO
YOLO is an abbreviation for You Only Live Once. The dumbass's excuse for something stupid they did. This is the new culture teenagers are crazy for. It is the modern day version of carpe diem with a twist. Each people has their own ideas when it comes to YOLO. Some have the ideas of; YOLO means we should enjoy life, even if in entails reckless behavior and taking unnecessary risks.

Although we know that it has a subjective meaning, we still have our own beliefs. Which can be seen not only in normal people but also to those well known people in the industry. We are given a phrase that can serve as an inspiration for us.

A. Positive Effects of YOLO
YOLO has a deep meaning. Though teenagers understand this in the wrong way by using this as an excuse to do reckless behaviors; there are still benefits that we can get from this phrase. All we have to do is open our minds and to have a deeper understanding on its true meaning.

Nathan Heflick stated in his blogpost called 'Psychology Today', particularly in one of his articles called "The Psychology of YOLO" a research on "post-traumatic growth"; it has been explored how terminal illness diagnoses and near-fatal experiences influence people. After a period of this type of illness, most of the people, experience a hard time to bring back the normal cycle of their life, on how they spend their time, their appreciation in life, and their general sense of happiness. "The phrase YOLO inspired them to devote their time on what they truly enjoy, and not worrying much about what previously stressed them," (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-big-questions/201309/the-
psychology-yolo).

The researcher has found this wonderful, on how this phrase can help people to recover from their illness. These article reminds us to be more responsible in making decisions. Decisions that can have consequences that can ruin or break your personality. You have to seek on what is the benefit that it can give to you right away. Because, what is more important is you, your happiness, and how can you have a good life.

B. Good vs Bad YOLO
According to the researchers observation; YOLO is being defined by everyone as a bad influence for the people specially to the teenagers. The people now a days enjoy having fun in a wrong way. But now the researcher wants to look at the other side. The people and the ways on how YOLO can also be in a good way.

Tony J. Washington stated in his blog called 'Positive Atmosphere', particularly in his article "The YOLO Effect"; It is clearly stated that YOLO can help people to live better. But, not all understands YOLO in this way. Others use this as an excuse to act reckless behaviors. Which can cause troubles in their life. But, if we would think responsibly in our actions; we can choose the righ and the good things that we deserve. We should cherish each moment of our life. Because, at the end of the day we all have one life to love and we shall live only once. "Start today by asking yourself why and then get busy modifying and changing what needs to change," (http://positiveatmosphere.com/profiles/blogs/the-yolo-effect).

It is good to experience and do the things that makes you happy. But, you have to consider some things before doing such thing. Cherishing each moment of your life can help you lessen your stress and problems in life. The researcher wants to remind the readers to be clever enough in seeking the true meaning of YOLO.

C. The Effect of YOLO in Christian Life
Life is a gift given by God, we should give importance and take care of it. We should be responsible enough in handling different choices and struggles in life. Because each action we make is our response for God's love to us.

Crystal Brothers stated his blog called "Serving Joyfully", particularly in one of his articles "Why Christians Should Live a #YOLO Life" a statement that says; all of the people know that God does care about of what we do - and what he wants us to live our one life for him. There are ways we should live out this concepts of our lives. And doing good things that can ruin your life. But if you think deeply, the real meaning of this phrase is really good. It is supposed to keep us closer to God. We have the limited amount of time to share the good news of salvation. "Witnessing can be very hard. But, if you only used your time wisely you can make the most out of it," (http://www.servingjoyfully.com/2013/08/20/why-christians-should-live-a-yolo-life/).

The researcher concluded that; witnessing can be very hard. But, if you only used your time wisely you can make the most out of it. We should also not waste our time messing up with our love ones. Instead, we should be considerate on others feelings and emotions. And always make sure that they can feel your love. Life as we all know is shorter than what we've imagined. That's why we should no waste our time. Instead, we should make our own legacy. In this way, we can have a peaceful life, and also a holy.

Blogpost 8: "YOLO Guidance"

.
Children needs parental guidance in their lives for them to lead in the right path. As we can see in the news, those minors who are getting in trouble are those who doesn't have parents. Or, their parents doesn't care of what their children are doing. In this blog I am going to show to you on how you should guide your children right.
The first article I read is titled  "A quick Guide To Understanding Your Child" by Robert Myers in childdevelopmentinfo.com.  This article explains that, "understanding your child is one of the most important things that you should learn as a parent." One of the ways you can understand your child is by observing their behavior. You should also talk to them because it is crucial in gaining information and understanding. In this way you can develop your relationship to your child, and in the same way you can also guide them accordingly.

The second article i read is titled "A parent's guide to teen social media slang" by Ellie Kahn in artcles.baltimoresun.com. This article give some ways on how parents can guide their teens in using social media language. "Keeping up with slang has always been a struggle for parents." Now many teens own smartphones, with instant access to different social medias. How can the parents guide them? The answer is communication. This is the very key to understand your children. And, also for them to listen and respect you as their parent.

The article given reminds the parents to have a good relationship with their children. This is really needed for them to be be in the right path. And as a children, you should be obedient and responsible. You only need a good communication with one another so that you would understand each other. I am supporting this kind of act because I don't like to see some children again in the news, who are doing the wrong things in life.

Robert Myers stated in his article that, "The environment at home is
another possible source for a behavior."

This quotation reminds the parents to always have the positive environment in home. Because this is the first place where they children is building their personality. If you will have the negative vibes in your home, then assume that your child will also apply that in their life. Because they are going to think that, that is the right thing to do. That's why you should lead as a good role model to your children.

Blogpost 7: "What Does Old People Think About YOLO"

We all know that YOLO is very familiar for the teenagers. But how about those people who are already getting old? Can they still cope in this phrase? Are they still affected by this trends? Are they still updated? I've created this blog to know if the oldies are still following the current events that is happening in the society. Let us know this by, reading the articles below.

The first article I read is titled "You Only Live Once" by Pam Rehart in retirewithicm.com. In this blog the author shared her experience regarding the phrase. She stated that, "I find that I apply the YOLO principle to my life much more now than I did when I was younger." She lost both of her parents and her sibling was only of 11 months. Probably, that's the reason why she didn't mind of having fun in her early age. Because she already had responsibilities. That's why when she got old, she pushed her self to have fun. And live the life to the fullest.

The second article that i read is titled "Super Classy Parents And Grandfather Charged With Giving 23-Month-Old Weed, Because YOLO" by Frances Locke in mommyish.com. This article states a story about two teen parents, and their grandfather who were arrested because, they helpes the teens smoke marijuana. They were charged with second-degree reckless endangement and endangering the welfare of a child. "Because "criminally idiotic" isn't a crime." According to the executive director of Renaissance House.

This articles shows two different kind of people. The first one shows on how responsible she is in handling different situations in life. Then, in the second article; the teen parents and the grandfather show immaturity, and the lack of parental guidance. This wants us to learn our lesson to be responsible

enough in our actions. If we are able to be responsible, we are going to be more succesful and live a happy life without regrets.

Pam Rehart stated in her blogpost that, "I'm trying to make as many memories as I                                                                 can and make all my moments count,"

I am inspired of this quotation, because as i read her story on the first article I can really imagine how happy she is when we overcome all the struggles that came in her life. I also wish that I can be her, being succesful. And having fun in life. I will make all the memories that I can with my loved ones. Again, we are being reminded not to waste each time of our life.

Blogpost 6: "YOLO Everywhere"

"YOLO" is the one of the most epidemic phrases today. If you didn't know about it, maybe you are living under a rock. It's the modern day version of carpe diem with a twist. Each one of us has our own ideas when it comes to YOLO. Some have the ideas of; YOLO means we should enjoy life, even if in entails reckless behavior and taking unnecessary risks. But some believes in this phrase in a different way. In this blog I am going to share to you some of the stories of the authors I've read in their blogs regarding to the phrase YOLO.

I read an article titled "Culture: The YOLO Craze in Social Media" by Natelege Whaley in heartconverse.com. This blog talks on how wide did the phrase already went through. First, when she googled YOLO she saw that YOLO has been recognized by the Urban Dictionary. Then, the author had a research on different social media networks like; Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and also Youtube.  She find out that the #YOLO is really overused in the social media. Specially the two biggest network today which is Twitter and Facebook. As she continue her research on YOLO she stated that, "What I also uncovered in YOLO-hunting is that YOLO can literately mean whatever you want mean now."

The second article i read is titled "#YOLO" by Andrea Partenio in theoddyseyonline.com. The author in this  blog shared his thoughts regarding the phrase YOLO, on how it is covering our community. She discussed on how the phrase YOLO popularized in their university. She as a student of one of the top universities in the world. In which she is already over stressed because of; balancing her classes, plenty home works, internship, and other school works. She realized that somehow, she and the other students that is having the same kind of cramming deserves to have fun every once in a while. The author stated that,"The work never ends, but college does." Remember, You Only Live Once and you should do all the things that will make you happy, so that you would be able to treasure memories.

This articles wants us to remind that even though we are cramming of our works we should still find our time to be relaxed and have fun. Because, it can help us to have a peaceful life. It can lessen the stress that is given by the deadlines that we need to cope up. We should still think of what is the right thing when we are having fun. Because, there are many temptation around us that can ruin our life.

Andrea Partenio stated in her blog post that, "YOLO and its conventional
uses are both useful and amusing."

This quotation implies that the phrase YOLO does not only offer bad influence/things. YOLO can be also in a positive way. All you have to do is do the things that will make you proud and happy of yourself. That's why you should just hold on the opportunities that is coming to you. So that your life would be worthy of all the things here on earth. You should always give your best at everything, and do not always place in your mind that there is a second chance. So that you will not expect too much.

Blogpost 5: "The Idea of Christians Regarding YOLO"

"You Only Live Once" this phrase is like a virus that is taking all the minds of the people, mostly in the bad way.  Now let us know what is the say of the church regarding this phrase. Are they supporting it? Or are they against it? The purpose of this blog is to send the readers the message of the church.

The first article i read is titled "Yolo: Yes or No" by Nicky Gangemi in fervr.com. This blog is all about the idea of Christians behind the idea of YOLO. This blog explains that You Only Live Once that's why you should treasure your life. Each of our decisions counts. We should give importance to our life because it is given by our God. The author stated that "God does care about of what we do - and he wants us to live our one life for him." This statement shows that we should be responsible enough in handling different choices and struggles in life. Because each action we make is our response for God's love to us.

The second article I read is titled "Why Christians Should Live a #YOLO Life" by Crystal Brothers in servingjoyfully.com. The author stated that the idea of YOLO today is having sex, drugs, drinking alcohol, "We should be commited to the cause of Christ."  There are ways we should live out this concepts of our lives. And doing other things that can ruin your life. But if you think deeply, the real meaning of this phrase is really good. It is supposed to keep us close to our God. Witnessing -"We have the limited amount of time to share the good news of salvation." Witnessing can be very hard. But, if you only used your time wisely you can make the most out of it. Relationships -We should not waste our time messing up with our love ones. Instead, we should be considerate on their feelings. And always make sure that they can feel your love. Parenting - If you are a parent, you should always think what is the best for your children. You should give him all of their needs. You should also hear their feelings for you to establish understanding and concern for one another. In Our Everyday Actions - Life as we all know is shorter than what we've imagined. That's why we should not waste our time. Instead, we should make our own legacy.

From those articles I learned that Christians is appreciating the phrase YOLO. I'm very happy that they are not just considering this as a small thing that just came out of no where. Now, we are all being reminded of our wrong actions. Because, all of the actions we are making is our payment for the life that is given by God. We all want to have a peaceful life, that's why we should live according to God's will.

Nicky Gangemi stated in his blog post that, "God has given us a life filled with good things to enjoy but it isn't to be delighted in without thinking about the bigger, eternal perspective."

This quotation reminds us that God has give all the things that we need in life, it's in our hands now on how are we going to handle and take care of it. We all know that God loves us so much that he let his only son die just to save us from our sins. We should always think of that whenever we are going to make a decision so that it would lead us to the right path.

Blogpost 4: "YOLO in a Good Way"

YOLO is being defined by everyone as a bad influence for the people specially to the teenagers. We see people now a days enjoy having fun in a wrong way. But now let's look at the other side. The people and the ways on how YOLO can also be in a good way.

The first article I've read is titled The Yolo Effect by Tony J. Washington in positiveatmosphere.com. This blog promotes the good intention of the phrase YOLO. The author explained that YOLO will help us to live better. If we choose the things that we like to happen in our life. We should also not waste our time in doing things that makes us upset. He also stated that "At the end of the day we all have one life to live and we shall live only once (on earth anyway). Start today by asking yourself why and then get busy modifying and changing what needs to channge."

The second article I read is titled YOLO Make It Count  by Kara Wheat in achieveguidance.com. In this article the author shared her thought regarding this phrase. She read an article that says; "There were 80 millions Millennials born between 1976 and 2001. This means three are tons of us out there and we have the potential to transform used phrase and make it into something good and positive." She also shared some examples on how Millennials are taking action around the world. She stated a story of a girl named Sara Hooker who has HIV/AIDS. But inspite of her illness, she didn't stop being productive. The author wants to tell us that nothing should stop us for our success.
Regarding from those articles, I felt happy that there are people who is pursuing the goodness that is within the phrase YOLO. There should be no hindrances that can ruin our dreams. Instead, we should start to make the move and be wise enough to think what is the right thing to do. We should be also inspired for those people that even though they have illness they are still fighting fo the right advocacy. That will help not only themselves but also those people that surrounds them. So for us that is  lucky enough to have a normal life,we should be productive more than them. And accompanied with that, we should not underestimate there capabilities.

Tony J. Washington stated in his blogpost that, "You oughta be able to be “you,” doing “you” in the ways that make “you” the most happy!  YOLO my friends, YOLO!"

This quotation reminds us that, happiness is a choice that requires effort at times. Efforts that can help us to be more productive and successful. We should be wise and responsible enough in handling different situations. And if the time came that we have to encounter struggles in life, we should not make a permanent decision that can ruin our personality. So that in the end we will not have regrets just lessons learned.

Blogpost 3: "YOLO in Hollywood"

Not only the normal people uses the phrase YOLO. This is also common for Hollywood celebrities. This is also the reason why YOLO is so epidemic. Because celebrities has a huge influence to us specially to the teenagers, which is accompanied by the social medias that causes them to have more power to influence other people. Which has good and bad effects depending on how they adapt the said phrase.

I read an article by Tehrene Firman titled, "5 Celebs Obsessed with YOLO" in teen.com. She presented different Hollywood celebrities who are taking their love for YOLO, and some maybe a little too far. Some of the them are; Zac Efron, he ] is very known for his handsome face. And started to be famous on his musical movie High School Musical. He made his love for the phrase permanent by tattooing YOLO into his hand. Next is Selena Gomez, she is a famous teen singer in Hollywood. She is also the ex girlfriend of Justin Beiber. She is wearing a YOLO shirt which symbolizes her support for the phrase. And also one of the famous families in Hollywood The Kardashians and Jenners are huge fans of YOLO, they show their love for it in the social media. Khloe Kardashian tweeted “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” Kylie Jenner tweeted, “I’ve had such a yolo weekend.” And even Kim K. kept up with the family trend, saying, “Go ahead and indulge yourself #yolo.”

The second article i read is by Isabella Shaya titled, "You Only Live Once" in statenews.com. She imposed her opinion regarding the phrase. Since celebrities support YOLO, she also should. That's why she join the crowd in this craze. But, when she heard about people getting YOLO tattoos, she knew that it already gone too far. The idea is correct, but the saying itself is stupid. The author agreed with in having this mind-set, that one of living every day like it's your last and finding the good in every moment. But disagrees when YOLO is being overuse. She concluded that there are two mindsets you can have when you embrace YOLO: a serious one, where you spend your time with your family and doing good things; or unreasonable one, wherein you make rash decisions in your life.

The following articles reminds us to be wise in choosing who are we going to idolize. Because, this is can also the affect the way we live. In the way that we might imply in our lives the things that we see to the people we idolize, which can either ruin or build our personality.

Tehrene Firman said in her blog that, "If you haven't heard about the phrase "YOLO"  yet you've been iving under a rock."

The quote explains how fast is the trend going in our environment now a days. Which is accompanied by the internet where in we are one click away from the information we want to know. That's why we should be wise enough in using it and implying itin our life. We should not overuse it in the way that can harm and other people.

Blogpost 2: "For Better or Worse: YOLO"

Each of us has our own beliefs regarding YOLO. And, I do believe that YOLO is made for us to realize that we should make the most out of our life. But some people, specially the teenagers today has a different interpretation. The concept of YOLO for them is partying all night long until the sun goes up. Ditching classes to go out with the "gang". Not studying before the final exams. Drinking, smoking and other activities that can kick your ass off. . In having different believes comes with different effects/consequences in our life. We should be responsible enough to know what are the wrong and right things that we should do. Because in the end we are the one who is going to suffer in the end.

I read an article by Simon Copland titled The US Cultural decline, or the untold story of the impact of YOLO in themoonbat.com. The author discusses about his thoughts on the real impact of the trend YOLO. He concluded that YOLO, may be bringing us short-term happiness, but it is stopping us from being able to plan for long-term success. We are living for now, but not planning for the future. This blog also states the different behavior of people. A psychologist notes that people enjoy time with their family, but they enjoy more with their friends. That's why they are more open to different activities without the guidance of their parents.

The other article i read by Nathan Heflick titled The Psychology of "YOLO"  in psychologytoday.com; states the benefits and the downside of YOLO. The Benefits of this phrase goes like this according to the author; There is a research on "post-traumatic growth" in Massachusets. They explored how does the terminal illness diagnose and near- fatal experiences influence people. After experiencing trauma, most of the people experience profound shifts in terms of spending their time. Many of this people stated that they feel like they never lived until diagnosed with a terminal illness. They are just devoting their time to what they enjoy in life. Which promote positivity and happiness, that helps them cure. The Downside of YOLO -Today, there are many publicized cases of "YOLO" which is associated by unrully behaviors. One of this is the incident of a popular rapper. He twitted "Drunk af going 120 drifting corners #FuckIt YOLO". Another tweet posted about drinking and driving. The tweet read, "Driving tweeting sipping the cup of f*** yolo I'm turning it up". At that day the rapper died because of car accident.

These articles reminds us to be responsible in our actions. Because all of the things we are doing has an effect in our life, its in our hands whether we are choosing the right or wrong. We should think of the consequences that will happen and also the people that is going to be affected. What is more important now is to think and plan how to have a bright future.

Nethan Heflick stated that, "The buzzword "YOLO" has both negative and positive consequences when adopted as a mantra. One one hand, it seems that it can lead people to live more happy, authentic lives. On the other, it seems that it can lead to more reckless and less healthy behavior."

This quotation wants us to understand that; YOLO has also positive effects on our health as proven. It can also be used as one of the keys to have a happy life. We just have to be smart in handling situations. But once me misused this motto it can led us to a broken and unhealthy life.We should be all responsible to our actions because the youth might adapt our wrong beliefs and continue it. Instead, we must show them good things and start being a good role model to the. Because like what the saying said "The children is our future". We should train them on how to handle different struggles in life and face it. Unlike the other teenagers now a days that they are just running to their problems by drinking and doing rash decisions.

Blogpost 1:"Conceptualizing the Idea of YOLO"

What is YOLO? This is an acronym for "You Only Live Once". This is very epidemic to teenagers today. They are using it as hashtags in different social medias. YOLO has a deep meaning but teenagers use this in the wrong way. For them this means having fun all day long, drinking, and smoking. Me and my boyfriend also argued about this. Because he loves hanging out with his friends, and make ass of themselves. I asked him; why is he doing those things even if he knows it can ruin his future? He replied that I should just understand him instead. Because we only live once and we should just enjoy being young. That is also the same reply i got when i asked his friend the same thing. I wanted them understand that they have the wrong beliefs. Because the real concept of YOLO is going out and doing something that will make sense to your life.

The first article I read is by Grant Hansell titled YOLO: An Analysis in huffingtopost.com. He stated that; YOLO has been the motto of the year. Made popular by Drake in his song "The Motto," the expression took the nation by storm and not only changed the way people think, but the way they act as well, and not always for the better. After reading articles about YOLO he started to analyze what it means. And there he come to two conclusions;

1.Immortality and living forever are not     the same thing According to him this two terms may have the same meaning, but the actions are very different. Immortality implies on having an infinite life in both physical and mental world. This would also require lack of aging. Living forever, on the other hand doesn't apply these things. Living Forever can be simply as living a legacy. And leaving a legacy is the essence of his interpretation of YOLO. 2.Death makes life worth itHe explained that all of us has our own deadline we must meet. This is needed so that all would be organized. So that we can make more opportunities for our own. He learned that life and that has their own relationship. That we all have our deadline, so its our job to live and make our own legacy.

The second article is by Gillian Orr titled YOLO: You only live once (so get a better motto) in independent.co.uk; this article is discussing about the comedy music troupe The Lonely Island- graduates of Saturday Night Live including star Andy Samberg; have subverted its meaning by turning YOLO into a cautionary tale. With the help from Maroon 5's Adam Levine. They made the song "YOLO" (the video had 10 million hits on YouTube in just three days). This song tells the audience that, "You Only Live Once/This life is a precious gift/ So don't get too crazy/ It's not worth the risk". They also put up warnings about drugs, clubbing, not cooking meat properly. and taking the stairs.

From those articles, I noticed that many of us now a days has the wrong perception about YOLO. That's why I've came up into my mind to make advocates like this blog that, can help the teenagers to know more about YOLO. And I am hoping that also the future teenagers can read this so that it can help to educate them. We should always remember to think twice when we are making decisions in life. So that we can live without regrets.

Grant Hansell stated in his blogpost that, " If you have become a YOLO enthusiast, I hope you see the expression for what it represents; living life to its fullest and leaving your mark on the world. So go out and do what you love and do it now. You'll be glad you did."

This quotation reminds each of us to analyze the true meaning of YOLO. I learned that not all things that makes us happy is good for us. If we already made some mistakes we should not forget about it. Instead, we should be using this as an inspiration to start focusing on what we have to gain. Each of us has our own path in life, we should be in the right one. Because the paths we take makes us who we are.
